Abstract
Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of acupressure on upper respiratory infections (URI) and evaluate its effects on heart rate variability changes.
Methods: A quasi-experimental study design was applied to verify the effects of acupuncture points acupressure on URI and heart rate variability. College women with URI were recruited from classrooms at college of technology in Taiwan and 15 eligible participants were assigned to either an acupressure group or control group. The acupressure
group received acupressure treatment within the URI. Symptoms of URI and heart rate variability were assessed prior to and 10, 30 minutes following treatment. Vision Analog Scale (VAS) was used to measure the symptoms ease of URI. .
Results: There were significant differences in symptom of URI between the two groups immediately after treatment and follow up to 30 minutes post treatment. LF/HF ratio of heart rate variability was significantly difference in acupressure group after treatment.
Conclusions: Based on these findings, acupressure can be an efficacy non-invasive nursing intervention for moderation of URI. Health care providers can use the acupressure to relieve symptom of URI.
