
Women’s Experience Living with Urinary Incontinence

Abstract
Urinary incontinence is recognized as one of the most prevalent health problems among women. Loss of urinary control can greatly impact their quality of life. The purpose of this study was to describe Taiwanese women’s experience living with urinary incontinence (UI). A qualitative descriptive design was used to gain an understanding of women living with urinary incontinence. Purposive sampling and in-depth interviews of twelve participants were conducted in , 2010. The findings from this study revealed that UI had physical, psychological , and social impact on the lives of participants. Five themes emerged from the data: 1. physical discomfort of being wet, 2. psychological impact of having UI, 3. social limitations, 4. woman's fatalism about UI, 5. finding strategies for self-care. In conclusion, women’s experiences of living with urinary incontinence were individual. It provides valuable insights on how women describe the impact of urinary incontinence on their daily lives. It is important for nurses to be able to communicate optimally, support and empower women in different health care settings.

摘要
尿失禁是婦女普遍且常見的健康問題之一,漏尿所帶來的困擾會影響婦女的生活品質。本研究的目的旨在描述台灣婦女尿失禁之生活經驗,採質性研究法,於2010年以立意取樣及深度訪談方式,共訪談了12位婦女。研究結果發現尿失禁對受訪婦女的生活影響包括有生理、心理與社交等層面,婦女尿失禁之生活經驗包含下列五個主題,分別為:不乾爽的難受、心理困擾、社交受限、婦女宿命、與尋找策略。婦女對尿失禁的生活經驗具有有其個別性,研究結果也提供了尿失禁對婦女日常生活影響寶貴的經驗,護理人員可藉由了解婦女尿失禁之生活經驗,在不同的照護環境中以適切的溝通方式主動詢問其是否有漏尿情形,並給予支持使婦女能因應失禁所造成之影響。
