Using Electromagnetic System to
Analyze Squat and Stoop Lifting Posture

AbstractManual handling of materials frequently occurs in performing the duties of many
occupations. Inappropriate handling techniques, particularly lifting posture, can lead
to serious injury. The two main techniques for lifting an object from at floor level are
squat (or leg) and stoop (or back). The purpose of this study is to examine the
fundamental dynamics of lifting posture, we compared the lifting postures of subjects
who preferred squat lift with those of subjects who did not prefer squat lift while
performing squat lifts, and to compare the lifting postures of subjects who preferred
stoop lifting with those of subjects who did not prefer stoop lift while performing
stoop lifts. During the squat lift, there is statistically significant difference in lumbar
flexion (13.35°, p < 0.05), but no differences in degrees of right hip flexion, degrees of
right knee flexion, or degrees of right ankle dorsiflexion (p > 0.05). During the stoop
lift, no significant differences were found among all variables comparing the two
groups (p > 0.05). This study has demonstrated that measurements obtained from such
an electromagnetic motion tracking system can provide useful and important
information on the motion of the body segments during lifting. The results of this
study found that the subjects perform more lumbar flexion in preferred squat lift than
in preferred stoop lift. This can be related to back pain mechanism. Further study is
needed.
Keywords:squat lift, stoop lift, motion analysis.
