Speaking Tasks: Their Influence on Nursing Student Perceptions of Grammar Learning

Abstract

This study proposes to integrate speaking tasks into grammar instruction for low-motivated learners to experience the language in use. The participating nursing students were learning English as an academic subject, but not as a practical tool for communication. Through interviews, a questionnaire, and task performance, the study confirms students’ need to express themselves in English through conversation and dramatization. Grammar has not been effectively integrated into the communicative activities of English for General Purpose (EGP) classes at the College. Both the curriculum and instruction of EGP implement the grammar component as knowledge, instead of as a knowledge application for the students. The study concludes with suggestions for implementing speaking components related to life topics and teaching selected grammar topics for communication tasks.

摘 要

本研究提出將口說活動融入低動機學生之文法學習中,體驗語用的感覺。研究對象為五專護理科學生,其將英文當一學科來研讀,而非視英文為溝通之實用工具。透過訪談,問卷及作業表現,本研究肯定學生需要以英文會話和英文戲劇方式來學習表達。研究指出文法教學並未有效融入學校一般英文溝通式的教學活動,而是把文法當知識來教,並非文法的實際應用。研究結論建議,設計生活相關的主題口說單元,並挑選指標性的文法單元,搭配溝通語用的作業活動,將有助於學生體驗語用。
